Metal Roofs: Why the Gauge Matters

Many homeowners are opting for metal roofs – and for good reason.

With the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions including strong winds, hail and heavy rain, as well as being energy efficient, durable, and offering a sleek look, metal roofs are becoming increasingly popular.

When choosing a metal roof, one lesser-known consideration is the materials gauge. The gauge refers to the thickness of the metal and ranges from 20-29 in the roofing industry with 20 being the thickest and 29 the thinnest. While thinner metal comes at a lower price, the integrity in using a thin metal can be lost. It is recommended to use a metal that has a gauge of 26 or lower. Keep in mind that while a higher gauge may be cheaper initially, the maintenance for a lesser quality material usually comes with a high price down the road.

Let’s look at the most common gauges for a metal roof:

  • 22-Gauge: Commonly used for heavy-duty commercial applications.

  • 24-Gauge: A popular choice for commercial buildings

  • 26-Gauge: Most often used in residential homes

  • 29-Gauge: Least upfront cost, shouldn’t be considered for roofs in areas with any extreme weather conditions

What is the best option for you?

  • Weather - more severe weather conditions require a lower gauge for a thicker material that can protect against the elements

  • Cost - the higher the gauge, the lower the cost / the lower the gauge, the higher the cost

  • Structural Integrity - if choosing a lower gauge, ensure your structure can handle the added weight of a thicker metal
