Spring Cleaning for Your Roof: A Homeowner’s March Checklist

While you are busy cleaning out the garage and pruning the garden this March, don’t forget to add your roof to the list. The winter months in Florida are relatively dry, but they can still leave behind debris that causes major problems when the heavy spring showers hit. A small amount of preventative maintenance now can extend the life of your shingles by years.
Clear the Gutters and Downspouts
Falling leaves, pine needles, and twigs from nearby trees can quickly clog your gutter system. When gutters are blocked, water has nowhere to go but up. It backs up under the starter shingles at the eave, leading to wood rot along the fascia and soffit. Ensure your downspouts are directing water at least three feet away from your home’s foundation to prevent settling issues.
Trim Overhanging Branches
Spring is a season of rapid growth for Florida’s oaks and maples. Check for any tree limbs that are touching or hanging within six feet of your roof. High winds can cause these branches to scrape away the protective asphalt granules on your shingles. These granules are what protect your roof from UV degradation; once they are gone, the shingle will fail quickly.
Identify and Remove Algae Streaks
Notice dark, vertical streaks on your shingles? That is likely Gloeocapsa magma, a type of algae that thrives in our humid climate. While it starts as a cosmetic issue, the algae eats away at the limestone filler in your shingles. March is an excellent time for a professional, low-pressure "soft wash" to kill the algae without damaging the roof surface.
A quick residential roof check this month will give you peace of mind as we head into the rainier months.
